Victims of Communism Day

Remembered by Ilya Somin at the Volokh Conspiracy:

"May Day began as a holiday for socialists and labor union activists, not just communists. But over time, the date was taken over by the Soviet Union and other communist regimes and used as a propaganda tool to prop up their regimes. I suggest that we instead use it as a day to commemorate those regimes’ millions of victims."

May 1 was observed as the Labour Day holiday in India. I found this out when one of my Indian colleagues asked me to run a report on May 1, because he was going to be out of the office for the holiday.

The thing is, when the Communists took over the Socialist International, or claimed to do so, they took over the holiday, as well.
